State Historical and Cultural reserve «The Field of the Great Poltava Battle»

Northwest part of modern Poltava is known as ancient battle place of numerous and various armies. In August 1399 there was a battle between Russian princes headed by Great Dutch of Lithuania Vytautas and Tatar hordes of Timur-Kurultay and Edigey khans. In summer of 1654 terrible murderous civil battles of «Ruina» started there. But the largest event happened there in June 1709 — that was a battle between armies of Peter I and Karl XII. In 1909 there was found a museum on that great battle field; in 1981 the museum area was called as the state and cultural reserve «The Field of the Great Poltava battle». Today it is the only Ukrainian museum which is one of UNESCO historical museums. Your trip to the museum, watching its unique exhibits and historical monuments on the battle field will impress you a lot!
